pistolgrip vs. other stocks?

Howdy. I’ve used shotguns for sport hunting for many years. Had shoulder surgery a little over a year ago. I converted my mossberg 500 to a shorter barrel and pistol grip for home safety. Took it to the range the other day, still in a lot of pain. I deffinately can not use the ‘regular’ stock. Pistol grip not working out either. should I ditch the shotgun and switch to a different line of defence? Or are there other types of stocks or modifications that I should consider? also, someone mentioned the less additions the better, what are you comments on magazine mounted flashlights and weaver mounted lasers?

Soooo, all three of those are incredibly equivalent guns. They all are targeting the same market demographic and they all are built around virtually the same manual at arms. So, what distinguishes them from each other?

1) How naturally does each one of them point for you? The Glock has the most rakish grip angle the Ruger probably the most straight up and down with the XD somewhere in between.

So, for each gun, pick it up, sight in on something, close your eyes, let your hands fall to low ready, bring the gun back up to where you think it should be on target then open your eyes. What you are looking for is that the sights on the gun are lined up – even if not exactly on your target, that it isn’t muzzle high or low, or radically left or right. The gun that points the most naturally is the one that you will develop accuracy with the easiest.

2) How do you like the trigger? This is the most important interface you have with the gun. Stock, the quality of trigger is probably the XD, then the Glock, then the Ruger. (by a long way in my experience) In the case of the Glock you can get a better trigger for under a $100. In the case of the Ruger I don’t really know of any smiths that have started working much on them yet.

3) How important is history to you? By far the Glock is the best proven of these three guns. Well into it’s 4th Generation there have been so many torture tests on the thing that it borders on the absurd. The XD is much newer in the US, but still has been around long enough to have good long term data on it. The Ruger is, relatively, quite new so is much less proven in comparison.

So, from my perspective I would probably choose either the XD or the Glock. Between those two the Glock fits me ever so slightly better so that’s what I have.

Why do so many guns use such simple sights?

So many guns use a notch rear sight and post front. Simple, easy to use, yet huge margin for error. There are many other common ones but this was the sight on my gun that I recently upgraded. Aperture sights are much easier to get a good sight picture and get accurate shots down range faster in my opinion, which is why I switched to that. The only reason I can think of is cost. A notch and a post seem cheap…what’s your opinion?

Sounds to me like you just never learned to use iron sights. If/when you ever do, you’ll realize they’re all you ever needed. Or, you could just go the “gangsta” route and stick a laser on it and not have to learn proper marksmanship at all.
