I have heard that a good red dot scope will help my aim, is that true?
No, and it might make it worse. The red dot is a close contact, fast acquisition sight. It might be good on a turkey shotgun or an AR, but it’s not the best for your hunting rifle. It would only help “aim” better than most scopes in that it keeps the dot on the target even as you adjust your eye left to right behind the scope/sight (overly simple explanation). The dot may cover a target at distances. Check out the Minute Of Angle (MOA) of the dot. 1 MOA=1 inch at 100 yards. An eight MOA is going to cover twenty inches at 250 yards. Where’s that deer’s vital region now? There are red dots with magnification (Trijicon ACOG–3X, 4X), but these are used primarily as rugged military/para-military scopes. A good 3-9X scope is much better for almost all applications with your versatile caliber. Trijicon makes “regular scopes” with illuminated reticles (the aiming part) as well at the ACOG. This takes the advantage of a brighter reticle in a lower light environment (dusk/dawn). There are other manufacturers as well. The new(er) Burris Eliminator gives you very small illuminated points, bullet drop compensation for a particular load/cartridge profile, programmable adaptability and a rangefinder all-in-one. While it’s around $850, that’s not as much as my 4x ACOG and does more. (Not that I would make the two equivalent; they’re for different applications. But I’d put the Eliminator on a .30-06 hunting rifle WAY ahead of the ACOG.)

Smith & Wesson M&P AR-15 opinions?
i have the option for a *smokin* deal on a used basic M4 style which has an inexpensive optic mounted. The gun is in 90% condition with 2 mags and carry handle (detached due to scope). Yes, i am aware of the modular nature of the ar-15, and that a lot are Ford vs. Chevy opinions, but if you own or have shot this gun, what do you think in comparision to other ar-15’s? I believe the model is 811000, chambered in 5.56.
Anyone use this as a duty gun?
Smith and Wesson AR15’s are manufactured by STAG and they are good entry level rifles, for the average person they are an excellent choice. In 99.9% of situations it would serve you well, you will be using 55-69 gr ammunition more than likely so a 1-9″ twist will be fine.
Personally for a duty gun I would go Colt, Noveske, Daniel Defense (what I have), BCM, and LMT.
