How night vision works

Night vision technology is something you have to acquaintance yourself first before going to the shop.

“Illumination by means of an infrared beam” , phosphoric screen” and “How light is amplified at night” are subjects you will come to understand reading this article.

When you think about these type of devices, you are looking at monoculars and scopes in the first instance, but you do get a few binoculars as well with this technology. Then you also get goggles, which is more for kids. Of the four available technologies only the most basic one (Generation 1) will be discussed. The other three are advanced, but too expensive.

Do you want to see objects in the dark? That’s what night vision monoculars/scopes etc. make possible. This is what they’re made for; not making things look closer than they are in real live, like binoculars do. However, you do get some magnification with certain models of night sight models.

So you would really like to see what’s making that noise among the trees, but it’s simply way too dark? Take up your night vision device and you cannot believe your eyes: A leopard has just killed an impala! Being able to see this is made possible by a special tube inside the night vision instrument, which has the ability to capture the little light there is (from the stars, moon or far-away house light), amplify it and present a vivid image to your eyes.

Infrared illuminator:  All quality night vision devices have a trick up their sleeves. They provide extra light (infrared) when the available light is not enough to get a bright image. They do that with infrared illuminators (or accept supplementary IR illuminators). This illuminator casts a virtually invisible infrared ray at the object at which you are looking, the objective lenses of the binoculars pick up the extra (infrared) light along with the visible light which is available and this then results in a brighter image.  Without this illuminator no night vision is possible when absolutely no light is available to amplify. All in all, the amount of light gain varies from 15,000 to 40,000 times, depending on the quality of the night vision device. The more light gained, the brighter the image.

Green screen: All night sight devices have a little green phosphoric screen on which you see (through the eyepiece) what’s going on in the dark. So what you’re actually seeing, is not the object itself, but a projected and amplified electronic image of what’s going on outside in the dark. But you won’t worry, since without it no vision is possible. The image that you see is not in colour; it’s in shades of green. Why green? This is interesting. The human eye can distinguish more shades of green than any other colour.

The light sensitive parts of Night vision devices are very sensitive, so you have to keep this in mind all the time. If you do not understand this, look straight into a sharp light and see what happens! These parts operate in low light conditions and if exposed to too much light, they will be damaged (or the life time shortened drastically). For this reason it is better not to switch on the IR illuminator from the start; first try only with the light amplifier. The phosphoric screen can last for 1500 + hours, but should not exceed 2500 hours in any case, so use your instrument as intended to get the maximum use from it. From this you can gather that buying a second-hand one is not that good an idea, since you might end up with a good looking instrument with only a few hours of service still left!

More expensive night vision devices always deliver better images than cheaper ones and this is very evident in the area where the image is located. Cheaper instruments have more black spots scattered over the image area and more expensive ones less spots. However, more spots or less spots, you will enjoy your night sight device! Image distortion at the edges may also occur.

Nathaniel Hawthorne: Peaceable & Inspiring

 A 19th Century American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote the Gothic romance The Scarlet Letter in 1850, a novel that achieved much critical acclaim. Hawthorne set many of his works in New England, specifically in a Puritanical 17th century town. The novel deals with psychological exploration of such themes as sin, repentance, and morality, with his previously written short story “The Custom House” forming the prologue. Three other major Romantic novels–The House of Seven Gables (1851), The Blithedale Romance (1852) and The Marble Faun (1860)—round out his fiction output.

During the part of his life lived in Concord, Massachusetts, Hawthorne befriended many of New England’s finest intellectuals including Amos Bronson Alcott and his daughter Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson.  After meeting President Abraham Lincoln in Washington D.C. and touring battlefields, Hawthorne then wrote the essay “Chiefly About War Matters,” under the pen name A Peaceable Man and published in the Atlantic Monthly, July 1862.

Because of his works, Hawthorne became one of the leading writers of his time, one who explored ideas of individual responsibility, the importance of creative expression and man’s relationship to the natural world. In addition, he wrote many stories about the mysterious and the disturbing.

Hawthorne read the works of others as well, enjoying especially the short stories of James Fenimore Cooper and Sir Walter Scott. Many of his own short stories however were not so well-received, at least at first. Nonetheless, whether it be Prynne’s indomitable spirit, the moral dilemma of “Young Goodman Brown” (1835), the disastrous side of vanity in “The Birth Mark” (1843) or “Ethan Brand’s Unpardonable Sin,” (1850), many of Hawthorne’s works gained popularity over the years and so that today they  live on, inspiring numerous other authors’ works as well adaptations to film.

Born on July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, Hawthorne was the son of Elizabeth Clarke Manning and Nathaniel Hathorne (without the “w”), a captain in the U. S. Navy who died when Nathaniel was four years old. William Hathorne, the author’s great-great-great-grandfather, a Puritan, was the first of the family to emigrate from England, initially settling in Dorchester, Massachusetts before moving to Salem. There he became an important member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony where he held many political positions including magistrate and judge. He in fact became quite infamous for his consistently harsh sentencing.

William’s son and the author’s great-great-grandfather, John Hathorne, was one of the judges who oversaw the Salem Witch Trials. Having learned about this, Nathaniel may have then added the “w” to his surname in his early twenties, shortly after graduating from Bowdoin College, in an effort to dissociate himself from his notorious forebears. The Salem Witch Trials however provided a theme for many of his stories including his most famous The House of Seven Gables.

Hawthorne attended Bowdoin along with poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and future American President Franklin Pierce, of whom he wrote a biography in 1852. Hawthorne himself however was not interested in entering any of the traditional professions, concentrating instead  on writing short stories, many of which were soon published in leading magazines. His first novel Fanshawe was published anonymously in 1828 and some years later his collection of short stories Twice Told Tales was published in 1837. Writing was not a profitable pursuit however, so Hawthorne worked at the Salem Custom-House for a while to augment his income. He also lived at the experimental transcendentalist community “Brook Farm,” but stayed only a year.

In Boston on July 9, 1842, Hawthorne married painter and fellow transcendentalist Sophia Peabody with whom he would have three children:  daughters Una (1844-1877) and Rose (1851-1926) and future author Julian Hawthorne (1846-1934). Hawthorne’s adolescent humor was on display when he wrote to his sister Louisa with the news of becoming a father to Julian. “A small troglodyte made his appearance here at ten minutes to six o’clock this morning,” he enthused. “(It) claimed to be your nephew.” Soon after, the Hawthorne and his young family settled in Concord, Massachusetts, in the heart of transcendentalist territory, living in a house known as “The Old Manse,” Scottish for “mansion.”  Hawthorne’s collection of short stories Mosses from an Old Manse (1846) soon followed.

In 1851, Herman Melville dedicated Moby Dick to Hawthorne. In 1852 Hawthorne bought a home called “The Wayside” where the Alcott family had once lived. There he created The Blithedale Romance (1852) and the re-telling of ancient Greek Myths in Tanglewood Tales for Girls and Boys (1853). The same year, with Franklin Pierce’s election as President, the Hawthorne family set sail for Liverpool, England where Nathaniel had been appointed to serve as U.S. Consul. Durign this period, they traveled throughout Europe, living for a time in France and Italy where they met fellow authors Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her husband Robert Browning. While in Italy, Hawthorne wrote The Marble Faun (1860).

Back home at “The Wayside,” Hawthorne continued to write of his travels in Passages From Notebooks. Our Old Home (1863) was his last publication, a year before his death. Nathaniel Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864. Franklin Pierce, James Russell Lowell, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes were among the many who mourned the loss of their beloved friend who lies buried on Author’s Ridge in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts, resting peacefully among such eternal friends as the Alcott family, Emerson and Thoreau.

An Intrepid Spirit

The year before the Civil War ended in 1865, a wagon train wound its way through treacherous country into North Boulder Valley, Montana. Nine Irish families staked their claims in the promising terrain weary from their trip but glad to be away from the lawlessness of gold rush town, Alder Gulch. Boulder Valley is 28miles from Helena, 35 miles to Butte “and about as close to heaven as I’ll ever get,” says Paul (Brud) Smith. Brud’s great-grandfather, Phillip Smith, was one of those intrepid travelers, bringing with him his family, including son Cornelius (Con as he was called) who drove an ox team from Denver to Alder at the age of 13. Con’s most memorable experience of the trip was when a band of Indians swooped down on the wagon train from the hills above, thankfully more curious than hostile, but nonetheless startling. No one was harmed, but one daring brave spotted Con’s favorite red shirt hanging at the rear of the wagon, claimed it jubilantly and made off with it much to his dismay. Indians, weather, backbreaking work and the sheer remoteness of the valley were trials for the young family.

Advice given to one young woman in the group seemed very fitting for this extraordinary journey into the unknown: “If you must go west, make sure you take your heavy underwear and your fortitude with you.”

Fortitude was always a part of young Con’s constitution as he again drove the team of oxen over land to settle the family in Boulder Valley a year after his red shirt disappeared. Under the guidance of his father, Phillip, the land was homesteaded and mysterious creatures never before seen in Ireland materialized, such as the foul smelling black and white critter called a skunk. Con, being the only son, had enormous responsibilities helping to establish the ranch: harnessing the river to provide water for crops and livestock, hewing trees to build homes and barns, moving mountains to build roads. When he was sixteen the decision was made that he needed to have a more formal education than he could get in the Valley. His well planned trunk and planned departure for a Jesuit school in Chicago ended not with him on the stage, but with him coming back to the ranch to stay.

In 1877, he filed for a homestead of his own after staying on to help firmly establish the main Smith ranch. He married a girl from a “well-to-do” city family who found her own home involved unimagined toil. But she rose to the occasion with her spirited pride giving birth to ten children, three of whom died in infancy and one at the age of fourteen in a tragic hunting accident. She nursed them through illnesses when the nearest doctor was 19 miles away, taught them their prayers and cooked beautiful meals.

A midwife was her only help throughout the years, besides a seamstress once a year, but the ranch required at least one ranch hand. Those ranch hands provided the children an endless stream of stories and one such hand, Billy, served as the gossip columnist for the valley telling the news and antics of all the neighbors. In the remote country, news and gossip were looked forward to and all visitors cherished. Having peddlers come was an especially joyful event for the children. “Oh, the indescribable joy of watching the peddler open his pack! We were simply fascinated with the wealth and variety of his wares whether gaudy or practical!” recalls one of the Smith children in a family paper.

Of the six children, Paul was the only one to follow in his father’s footsteps as a rancher and politician. He was elected to the State Railroad and Public Service Commission where he served for over 25 years. He and his wife, Vivian, bought the present ranch in 1938. Brud, Paul’s son, spent summers on the new ranch until the third grade when the family moved there permanently. He graduated from Jefferson County High School where 250 students came from as far away as 25miles. Jefferson County is the only county in the state that doesn’t have a stoplight and the little town of Boulder, population 1,500, supplies the rural communities with just about everything one might need. After an undergraduate degree from Gonzaga and a stint in the Navy to see the world, Brud came home to Montana, getting his law degree from the University of Montana. He practiced

Indian Law and had his own firm before returning to the ranch in 1982 deciding to go back to what he loved. His parents were still living so he made his home outside of town and practiced law while a manager ran the ranch. In 1986, he took over the ranch and drove daily through its gates. In 2000, the family moved there because, as he says, “I wanted them to have a day-to-day ranch experience.” His two girls, Brady and Darby, like the ranch and are good help calving, haying and, in general, being ranch hands. His wife, Terry Minow, still drives to Helena to act as the political director for a teacher and public employee union. She enjoys ranch life because it is much like home. Raised on a ranch 70 miles from Miles City and 35 miles from Broadus, Montana, she was schooled in a one  room school house and helped her family dry land farm, raise wheat and cattle. Her fondness for the lifestyle is evident. It didn’t take her long to grow to love Boulder Valley where, she says, “People take care of each other here, and they care for each other. It’s a wonderful place to raise a family.”

The Boulder Valley has been raising Smith families for five generations. “The Valley is always only three days away from a drought,” quips Brud with a smile on his face. At 4,500 feet, the ranch is filled with mountainous meadows and lots of rocks, pretty tough ground to farm but they still manage to cut 400 acres of native grass hay, 350 acres of alfalfa and, on some years, grain, which satisfies the 1,200 ton of hay a year it takes to feed their stock. Running a commercial herd on 3,000 private acres and BLMand Forest permits, Brud uses his political skills and sense of humor to deal with the politics that plague the ranchers who deal with the federal government. One such talk was to celebrate 100 years of the Forest Service. “Dealing with Forest and BLM plans, they usually have an ‘indicator species’ which, if present on the landscape, indicates that the eco system is doing well and that the habitat is in good shape. It is usually something like a Pileated Woodpecker or jumping field mouse, depending on what ground is being reviewed. My thought, a great indicator species is seeing cattle on Forest Service or BLM land. It indicates that there are ranches in the vicinity that are part of the ecosystem and are providing open spaces, habitat sustaining wildlife both on private property and for seasonal wildlife from federal lands. It also means a family or more contributing to the local community’s desired rural lifestyle, often providing access and hunting to the public. The alternative is, when you kick the cows off of federal land, more than likely the rancher will have to sell off marginal land for subdivisions or give up ranching entirely. In other words, no cattle permits for ranchers is great for subdivisions, and bad for open spaces, wildlife habitat, sustainable ecosystems, access and hunting.”

Given Brud’s experience, he wouldn’t trade the world to go back to being an attorney. “Not even the times when you are seven short gathering cattle from the mountains and a blizzard sets in. Not even when the bulls are fighting and you have no fences left. Not even when you are watching a calving cow like a hawk and the calf still dies. I want to see the land I am involved with continue to be agricultural. My hope for the future is that the kids can carry it on. The agricultural system is an important part of the fabric of the West. The ranching community has a social fabric where the folks rely on each other, they have a real community.”

After all, what other communities turn brandings into social events, hold testicle festivals, answer a call for help in the middle of the night or stop along side the road to help someone with a flat tire? For Brud Smith and his family, ranching is right where they want to be, carrying on a family tradition and creating a new generation with a strong work ethic. “Our parents taught us by example,” says Terry, who sums up the lifestyle in those six, short, poignant words.

I want to find the fitted TB12 hat Tom Brady has been wearing for the past year. I don’t want the one that says Brady and then a 12 he one that has a TB logo. Help me out. thanks
