Where can I find a regular bow to purchase?

I want like a basic bow and arrow to practice archery with. None of that high tech compound wussy BS. I just want to do it like the warriors of the past did.

Someone has read James Fenimore Cooper. And/or seen the movie.

There are a lot of great bowmakers out there, and I for one can only encourage archers to go the traditional way. Pulleys and high-tech composites and bow-sights are all good, but you truly get the feel of archery when there are fewer components between you and the shaft you’re shooting, preferably right off of your fist instead of some arrow-shelf.

For very good recurves, I would recommend you deal with Ed Gilbert, at www.horsebows.com. He deals in bows made by Kassai, which are magnificent weapons. But I highly recommend you look up Kassai’s website, or Grozer’s. They are probably the finest makers of recurves out there today.

However, if you are interested in an English-style or Japanese-style longbow, I’m afraid I can’t help you much. I’m a recurve man myself.

If you want something made of authentic materials, be ready to pay through the nose. While wood, horn and sinew can outdo modern materials, they are also much, much more expensive. However, I would definitely love to fire a horn and sinew bow someday…

Where to buy bow and arrows?

I want a real bow and arrow set but I want something thats kinda like what they used in the old days but It can’t be over 100 dollars. i don’t want it to have all the extras that they do now. Just a regular hunting bow and some arrows.

Pro Shops will often have a used rack or you could check a pawn shop. To be honest with, I think you will find it hard to find a decent, non damaged bow and arrows too at $100 or less. Good luck.

What is the significance of the 4 number code that is on my alunimum arrows?

I have some archery arrows and was buying some nocks, and They wanted to know what the 4 digit code on my arrows was. What is the significance of those numbers?

On almost all aluminum arrows the code refers to the overall diameter of the arrow shaft and the thinkness of the metal of the shaft. The first 2 numbers refer to one stat and the second 2 numbers refer to the other. Unfortunately I don’t remember which is which. Basically you will want the overall diameter to match the width of the point you will use and you want thicker metal for heavier draw weight bows (basically any draw weight over about 65lbs) A good archery store will carry the same model or arrows but with the different sized diameters and thinknesses to allow for different bows, inserts, points etc. There isn’t really hard and fast rules with these size and you can just try different arrows to see what seems to work best. Many good hunting stores will test fire multiple arrows with different fletching(feathers), inserts or points on your bow to see what seems to shoot the smallest cluster.

Arrows 200 vs 300?

I’m shooting a PSE Nova Solo Cam set at 63# and have arrow length of 28-1/2″, topped off with Muzzy 3 blade fixed @ 100 grain. My current arrows are PSE Carbon Force 200 series. Charts tell me at that weight (63#) I can go with the 200’s or the 300’s.

The 300 will be a little heavier than the 200 for the same length arrow. The 200 will shoot slightly faster but the 300 will have more kinetic energy for better penetration. To find kinetic energy you multiply the weight of the arrow (including the point) by the velocity squared and then divide that by 450,240 and it will give you the kinetic energy in ft/lbs. BTW, I’ve shot Muzzy broad heads since they came out and so do all the guys I hunt with. We’ve taken wild boars, several bears, 2 elk and so many deer I couldn’t even begin to take a guess. Still the best out there in my humble opinion. Good luck with whichever arrow you choose.

Where do you put the nocks on a bow string(recurve bow)? And where on a long bow string?

Both of these bows should be shot instinctive. I usually put a marker spot right on center to help me with arrow position. You can actually adjust up or down to see which position best suits your style. Once you have found a comfortable spot you can place your nock. I prefer to put a dab of white paint to mark the spot as opposed to clamping a nock on. I shot recurve for 12 years before switching to a longbow last year. Remember your shooting style has to change from one bow to another. You have to cant the longbow more than the recurve.
