sling for a trebuchet?
i am making a trebuchet for my exploring Technology class, i would like to know if any one has any suggestions on what i should use for the sling. i was thinking using the elbow off of an old Leather jacket or something, so it has that curve in it to hold the object. we will be shooting grapefruit out of it so i was thinking something a little bit bigger too. any suggestions?
Generally the pouch section is made “pouchy” by either taking up some of the sides in the middle (not confusing, just hard to describe) or bringing the corners together where the sling lines attach. There’s a great site for basic trebuchet info, set up by “Ripcord”, a guy who really knows his stuff.

He has a whole section on slings and pouches. The one I like is from L&B, with 3 tabs on each end. I’ve used it a lot, even throwing small pumpkins nearly 200 feet with one made from denim from an old jeans leg. He gives dimensions for various size balls but you might need to scale it for the grapefruit.
One hint: 1/8″ nylon cord will hold up under any reasonable amount of counterweight for throwing grapefruit. At least up to 200 lbs worth.
